Save Money with Energy Efficient Home Repairs
With the economy the way it is, more people are looking at making their homes more to their liking. That means more folks are renovating where they currently live so they get a better return on their investment or they are trying to save money by making their homes more energy efficient. Either way you look at it, saving money is definitely in and if you can make your house look good while you are doing it, then the better the return on your investment!
The Department of Energy recently stated that most families waste up to 5% of their homes energy because of bad windows and doors. Replacing windows that are more energy efficient not only will save you on heating and cooling costs down the road, but it can also help update the look of your home from the outside. The more efficient your windows are, the less your other systems, like your heating and air, will have to work to make your house comfortable.
Redoing the outside of your house can also make a difference. There are many products out on the market which help reduce the amount of energy your home loses and that includes vinyl siding. Vinyl siding not only improves the look of your home, but it can dramatically increase the R-value of your home which will help keep you cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Plus, vinyl siding is virtually maintenance and pest free! So not only will you be saving money in energy costs, but you won't have to worry about painting, pests or other issues that come up when you have regular wood siding on your home.
Another great way to help your energy costs is by replacing your old appliances. And there are many rebate programs out there thanks to the Federal government that will help you recoup the costs of these things, either up front or when you file your taxes. Many older kitchen and washroom appliances use a lot of energy and are not as efficient as the newer models. It would just make sense to replace these items because they are no longer as effective as they used to be, and the longer it takes you to replace them, the more they are going to cost you.
One of the best things to replace and that is often overlooked is your air conditioning unit. Depending on what kind of model you have, whether window A/C or central A/C you really need to consider the energy efficiency of both. Window coolers are nice since they help cool a room quickly, but they may also be the main culprit for your house not being as energy efficient as it could be with windows leaks and the fact that it could draw out a lot of power. And central A/C is great when you take the time to maintain all the facets of it. You have to change out the filters regularly so it does not get bogged down and sometimes, it's just better to replace the whole unit with a newer more efficient model that doesn't use so much energy to run.
We touched on appliances earlier but did not talk about washers and dryers. There have been so many technological advances when it comes to these appliances that you will be amazed at all the options out there. Front loading washers use much less water than their top loading counterparts. They work better, faster and use less energy. And dryers have seen many advances as well. They are quieter and dry faster, meaning you use less energy when they are working for you. The best thing to do is to run your washer and dryer at night when there is less demand on energy and you will be amazed out how much cheaper your energy bill will be.
